Had enough of JB? https://RickForIllinois.com – Illinois is hemorrhaging residents at an unprecedented rate, and one Republican challenger thinks he knows exactly why. With over 420,000 people fleeing the Prairie State since 2020, businessman Rick Heidner is stepping into the political arena with a message that hits close to home for struggling families across Illinois.

In this exclusive interview, Heidner pulls no punches when discussing Governor J.B. Pritzker’s leadership, calling out the billionaire governor for spending more time positioning himself for a presidential run than actually addressing the crushing problems facing ordinary Illinoisans. Property taxes are driving seniors from their homes, crime rates continue climbing, and businesses are getting squeezed by regulations that seem designed to push them out of state entirely.

What makes Heidner’s story so compelling isn’t his political pedigree because frankly, he doesn’t have one. This guy built his empire from absolutely nothing, starting as a kid helping his single mother make ends meet by running paper routes and cleaning apartment buildings just to knock twenty bucks off the rent. His father walked out when Rick was barely one year old, leaving his mother to raise two boys while working as a maid and hostess. By the time he was sixteen and a half, Heidner had already started his first business, and today his family enterprises span over 800 locations across Illinois.

From fuel distribution to Ricky Rockets Fuel Centers to Gold Rush Gaming with 735 customer locations, plus a real estate portfolio that includes 280 buildings across 12 states, Heidner has watched Pritzker’s administration try to undermine his businesses at every turn. He’s lived through the regulatory nightmare that’s driving companies and families out of Illinois, and now he’s channeling that frustration into a gubernatorial campaign built around transforming Illinois from what he calls “a state of take” into “a state of make.”

Heidner argues that his diverse business background gives him insight into the struggles facing everyone from single parents barely scraping by to property owners dealing with crushing tax burdens. Having started with nothing and built multiple successful enterprises, he understands both the potential Illinois has and the barriers that Pritzker’s policies have created for working families and small business owners.

This interview reveals why so many Illinois residents are looking for alternatives to the current leadership. While Pritzker spent over 150 million dollars of his own money to get elected and is already eyeing a third term, Heidner represents something different entirely. He’s not coming from a think tank or climbing the political ladder. Instead, he’s emerged from the streets of Illinois with firsthand experience of what it takes to succeed despite government obstacles rather than because of government help.

The conversation touches on the broader exodus from Democratic-controlled states and why Illinois has become a cautionary tale for other regions considering similar tax and regulatory policies. With families continuing to pack up and leave for states with lower taxes and better business climates, the stakes for Illinois couldn’t be higher heading into the next election cycle.

Ahead of the Illinois primary election, NBC Chicago Political Reporter Mary Ann Ahern sat down with Republican Rick Heidner, who hopes to face Governor JB Pritzker in the 2026 midterm election.

Q&A

Are you comfortable with the way the state budget is developed? If not, what should be done differently?

Our budget process encourages year-over-year increases in spending, which in turn lead to even higher taxes for Illinois residents. As governor, the annual budget proposal I would submit would be crafted with the end-goal of reducing bloated spending and helping our state be able to attract out-of-state businesses. Our current budget is divorced from the reality that our state’s taxpayers simply cannot afford more increases. Tax reform begins with budget reform.
